Nissan LEAF as ‘Car of the Year’

Last year was a great and historical year for Electric vehicles, since it was the first time that a zero emission vehicle won the greatly prized title of “Car of the Year.”
In November 2010 Nissan LEAF was selected for the final. The Nissan’s 100% electric vehicle won against six rivals. Among these rivals were Alfa Romeo Giulietta, the Opel Meriva, and the Citroën DS 3.
The jury acknowledged today that the Nissa LEAF is a breakthrough for electric cars. Nissan LEAF is the first EV that can match conventional cars in many respects”, said Hakan Matson, president of the jury. It was a close victory, with 257 points, against the 248 points of Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Opel Meriva took the third place, with 244 points.
Also, in the United States another electric car has won the Green Car of the Year prize, from the Green Car magazine. This vehicle is General Motors ‘Chevrolet Volt.
Now, as far as we can observe, this is a great achievement in the environmental issues, since all the research efforts in the field are concentrated on electric vehicles. But, there is a price to pay for everything. What’s going to happen with all those batteries after their usage? Are they 100% recyclable? How do you obtain that energy? At what cost? What about gasoline? It’s going to disappear?
